The sculptor, Charles Parks, offers this insight on a plaque in front of the statue:

"Back when doves and hawks meant peace-loving or war-loving, it seemed important to symbolize the need for balance in our view of world affairs and so the human being supporting both the predator and prey.

Making sculpture takes a lot of time and as I worked on this piece week after week, it seemed the work took on a broader and more important meaning: that we have the capacity, in a sense, to balance the world's ecology or to destroy it. This bronze sculpture of a young man is meant to symbolize that balance and that choice."
